Frequently Asked Questions

| FAQ | Links | History | Membership

Here are a few basic questions and answers about Christian Science. Visit christianscience.com to learn more.

Q. What is Christian Science?

A. Christian Science is the study and demonstration of Christ Jesus’ teachings found in the Bible. Jesus proved that when God’s spiritual laws are understood, healing happens. The laws of God are as powerful and permanent as the laws of music or mathematics and are as effective as they were for Jesus over 2,000 years ago!

Q. Who is Mary Baker Eddy?

A. She is the discoverer of Christian Science and founder of the Christian Science church. In 1866, she was healed of life-threatening injuries by reading the Bible. This healing compelled her to write a book called Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which was first published in 1875. Although Christian Scientists are very grateful to Mary Baker Eddy for her discovery, they don’t deify or worship her.

Q. Is Christian Science the same as Scientology?

A. No, there is no connection whatsoever. Christian Science was discovered in the late 1800s by Mary Baker Eddy. It is based on the Bible and a love of God.

Q. Is it true that Christian Science is a cult?

A. No, not in any way. Christian Scientists strive to be independent thinkers and all Christian Science branch churches are governed democratically with no personal preaching or ritualism.

Q. Why don’t Christian Scientists go to the doctor?

A. It’s up to each individual, but the norm is reliance on treatment by prayer in this Christian system of healing.

Q. What is Christian Science treatment?

A. It is a focused form of prayer for the purpose of healing. Treatment can be used:

  • for physical healing
  • addressing financial lack
  • handling employment-related issues
  • resolving difficult relationships,
    and much more.

You can ask any student of Christian Science for treatment, or seek out a full-time Christian Science practitioner.

Q. What is a Christian Science practitioner, and
how do I find one?

A. A practitioner is an experienced Christian Scientist that maintains a full-time professional practice helping others through prayer.

The Christian Science Journal includes a directory of practitioners located in Bellevue and around the world.

Church History

| FAQ | Links | History | Membership

The first Christian Science services in Bellevue were held more than 100 years ago.

  • The church in the 1940's.
  • The present day church.

History of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Bellevue

In 1912, Christian Science services were held informally in Bellevue.

In October 1923, the Christian Science Board of Directors of The Mother Church in Boston, MA formally recognized the Christian Science Society of Bellevue, Washington.

The steady growth of the Society inspired the members to apply for status as a branch church of The Mother Church in 1944.

The membership grew and eventually purchased property on Lake Washington Boulevard where they built a church among trees by the bay.

In November 1940, to accommodate the growing congregation, the church was sold and a new one was built in a new location on NE First Street and 98th Ave NE.

Finally, in July 1959, after thorough consideration and prayer, property was purchased at Lake Washington Boulevard and Overlake Drive, the church’s present location.

The first church service was held in this edifice on April 10, 1960.
